Understanding the Role of a Wedding Celebrant

November 29, 2007

The role of the wedding celebrant consists of many duties which include performing the marriage ceremony. The celebrant must be legally allowed to perform marriage ceremonies. Depending on the type of wedding ceremony you are having, the role of the wedding celebrant can be major or minor.

In many religions, the role of the wedding celebrant is quite involved. Often, it is the job of the celebrant to assess the couple and make sure they are fully prepared to enter into marriage together. This may involve a single meeting, several counseling sessions, or even group sessions with other couples intending to get married. These sessions will include some of the major points that will come up during the marriage, such as how many children the couple wants to have, where they would like to live out their life together, how they handle an argument, and their views on careers. Many couples talk about these potential situations prior to getting married, some couples never feel the inclination to discuss these topics and that can cause a marriage to end prematurely. Since these couples will likely be married in a religious institution, it is the role of the wedding celebrant to ensure that the couple is ready to be bound by their religion and to one another.

Many couples choose to forego a religious ceremony and are married by a Justice of the Peace, a judge, or even the captain of a boat! These people are generally less involved in the planning of the ceremony. In this case, the role of the wedding celebrant is to help the couple by offering them options for vows, performing a run through of the ceremony, and performing the ceremony on the day of the wedding. The role of these wedding celebrants is much more limited.

It is also the role of the wedding celebrant to follow the rules set forth by either the religious institution or the law. They have final say on what occurs during the ceremony and which vows the couple may choose to say to one another. The role of the wedding celebrant is to guide the couple through the planning of their wedding ceremony as well as carrying through with the ceremony on the wedding day.

While it may not seem that the role of the wedding celebrant is any more significant than performing the wedding, couples must realize that a lot goes into planning these wedding ceremonies and must be willing to work with the wedding celebrant. Together, the wedding celebrant and the couple can design the wedding ceremony that the couple has been dreaming about.
