Keeping the Memories Alive

April 23, 2007

One of the hottest trends in crafts lately is the art of scrapbooking. If you’ve always wanted to give it a try, your wedding may be the perfect occasion to inspire your creativity. To get a taste of this craft, why not start by scrapbooking your wedding invitation? This small project can help you decide if you want to create a larger scrapbook for your entire wedding.

The Basics
Start by browsing the aisles of your local craft store to look at the many specialty papers and albums available. Typically, paper comes in hundreds of colours, patterns, and textures. Check out accessories such as stickers, rub-on transfers, inked stamps, cut-outs, and even 3D card toppers and embellishments. If the local craft store doesn’t have much to offer, one quick whirl around the Internet will yield everything from miniature bridal gowns made of silken fabric to “Here comes the bride! stickers in vibrant colours and fun designs.

Designing Your Invitation Page
There are several options that will help you display your wedding invitation to its best advantage. Here are a few ideas.

  • Dedicate one scrapbook page as a “title page for your invitation. At the top, use a calligraphy pen or letter stickers to write the words Our Wedding Invitation. In the center of the page, attach your invitation’s protective envelope to the paper, with the address side down. Leave the envelope flap unsealed and tuck your complete invitation inside! Now your scrapbook reader can open the envelope and enjoy the sensation of receiving your invitation all over again.
  • Design a second page that showcases the front and inside of your invitation, using two invitations so that all of the wording and artwork may be viewed at once.
  • Take the time to create a neat list of the guests who were invited and their relationship to you. A great way to do this is by creating the list as a document. Select an attractive script font, and print the list directly onto your chosen scrapbook page.
  • Literally thousands of scrapbooking supplies are available to be downloaded from the internet. You can choose from backgrounds, borders, clip art, and even ready-made templates. Many of these resources are completely free. There are even websites that allow you to create scrapbooks online using graphics and your own uploaded images like your scanned wedding invitation! You can have the surprisingly affordable scrapbooks published and delivered right to your door. Your friends and family can order copies of your scrapbook, too, without you having to do the work all over again!

This is Just Not For Me!
What happens if you complete your invitation scrapbook pages, but realize it took you three months to do it? If you don’t have the time or desire to create a full scrapbook of your wedding, all is not lost. You can still create beautiful artwork from your invitation pages by framing them in a shadowbox, along with significant mementos from your wedding day. Include mementos like dried flowers from your bouquet, a slip of ribbon that decorated the room, or favors such as printed matchbooks or napkins. Display the shadowbox with your favorite wedding photos as a cherished reminder of your wonderful day.
