Couple Renews Wedding Vows On 75th Anniversary

August 18, 2008

Mamerta and Sabas Cabale renewed their wedding vows in a big way at St. Aidan’s Church in Rooty hill this week. The couple, who eloped when Mamerta was just 14 years old, staged a traditional wedding with a white gown and tuxedos. The 90-year old bride and her 102 year-old husband have 10 children and moved to Australia ten years ago from their native home in the Philippines.

Sabas Cabale was a chauffeur when he eloped with Mamerta, who lived in a convent at the time, but Mamerta never forgot her dream of a beautiful white church wedding. Guests from Europe, the United States and the Philippines traveled to Rooty Hill for Mamerta and Sabas’ big day, but the couple won’t be celebrating a honeymoon for lack of money.

The Cabales did note that the Pope was in Australia and invited him to attend their wedding. Unfortunately for Mamerta and Sabas, the Pope was unable to attend.
