Google Billionaire Weds in British Virgin Islands
December 17, 2007
Google co-founder Larry Page wed his long-time girlfriend Lucinda “Lucy” Southworth in a closely guarded ceremony at Necker, a 74-acre island in the British Virgin Islands. The wedding site, which is accessible only by helicopter and boat, hosted as many as 600 guests and was fully rented for the three-day event. Most of the wedding guests were housed at hotels on nearby islands and were reportedly asked to sign confidentiality agreements. The ceremony, which had been expected to take place on December 8, reportedly took place on December 9.
The bride and groom have been dating for several years. Ms. Southworth is a PhD candidate in bioinformatics at Stanford University. Mr. Page left the PhD programme at Stanford to found Google with classmate Sergey Brin.
Among the guests were Bono, of U2 fame, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, both of whom reportedly performed at the reception. The guest list has been the subject of much speculation, and was rumoured to include former US Presidents Carter, Bush and Clinton. The bride’s family also has close ties to the current President Bush. The Clintons said late on Friday that neither of them would be at the wedding, due to Mrs. Clinton’s public appearance schedule.
Richard Branson, who owns the island, was reportedly Page’s best man. Further details of the wedding and reception were unavailable.
