Monaco Sources Confirm That Albert Is Planning A Wedding

March 18, 2008

His Royal Highness Albert, Prince of Monaco will marry Charlene Wittstock at the end of the summer. The pair have been together since the 2006 Winter Olympics. Ms. Wittstock is a former South African swimming champion.

An engagement announcement for the couple has been anticipated for several months, and while the palace has not issued a formal announcement, it did confirm for the French publication Point de Vue that a royal wedding is in the planning stages. Accompanying the story was a formal portrait of the prince and Ms. Wittstock, released one day prior to Prince Albert’s fiftieth birthday.

This will be the first wedding for both Prince Albert, and Ms. Wittstock, 30. Prince Albert has two children from previous relationships, neither of whom are eligible to succeed him to the throne. Monaco modified its male-oriented succession rules in 2002 to accommodate the possibility that Albert would not produce an eligible heir. The modifications allowed Albert’s sisters, Caroline and Stephanie, and their children to presumptively succeed Albert in such a circumstance.

The announcement in Point de Vue indicated that no date had been set for the wedding. A formal announcement from the palace is expected in the coming weeks.
