Sydney Museum Hosts Diana’s Wedding Dress

September 24, 2007

The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney will play host to the silk taffeta, ivory tulle and lace wedding dress of HRH, the late Princess Diana. The dress, which was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, has more than 10,000 sequins and a 25-foot train. The veil, which will not be on display with the dress, is also covered in sequins.

It is, perhaps, the most famous - if not the most viewed- wedding dress in the world, considering that the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales was viewed worldwide by more than 750 million people in July, 1981.

The museum exhibit, which runs from 29 September 2007 to 4 May 2008, also features 150 other outfits, jewellery that belonged to the late princess and memorabilia from her childhood. Proceeds from the exhibit will be directed to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

The Emanuels wrote a book published in 2006 about the dress, which includes design sketches, and photographs taken at the time the dress was being made. The couple were chosen to design the dress by Diana herself, after they sent a blouse to Vogue Magazine for a photo shoot featuring the princess-to-be. At the time, the couple did not know who the subject of the shoot was. Diana liked the blouse so well, she asked about the designers and selected them to make her wedding gown.
