Texas Couple Celebrates 80th Wedding Anniversary
December 26, 2007
Minnie Lou and Mel Scott celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary in Palestine, TX in November. The couple, aged 99 and 100, respectively, are thought to be the oldest married couple in the United States. The couple attributes their longevity to “living right”, working and eating three meals a day.
The pair wed on the stage of a traveling tent show, and were offered $25 by the show’s producers for the impromptu wedding. The couple figured the public wedding was acceptable, since most of the guests they planned to invite to their wedding were at the show anyway. The Scotts, who confess to enjoying bacon at breakfast each morning, still do yard work together around the house they built right after they married in 1927.
Mel Scott worked regularly until he was 82, retiring from his job as a night watchman, and Minnie Lou took care of the house. The couple’s only son, James, is now 78, and says that his father only recently gave up driving a tractor and using his chain saw. He also says that his parents’ simple lifestyle has helped him to live conservatively.
For now, the Scotts are looking forward to having the whole family together for Christmas.
