Earlier this summer, Forbes Magazine published a list of the 20 most expensive celebrity weddings. Most of us can’t compete on wealth with the nuptials of the Rich and Famous, but it’s fun to take a look at what others have spent on their events. We’ll only review the top 10, but the whole list is available at:
10. Eddie Murphy and Nicole Mitchell: $1.5 million. The pair were married at New York’s Plaza hotel in front of 500 guests in 1993.
9. Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren: $1.5 million. Mr. and Mrs. Woods were married in front of 120 guests at the Shady Lane Resort in Barbados in 2004. Woods rented the entire hotel, along with the island’s only charter helicopter service to keep the chopperazzi at bay.
8. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones: $1.5 million. The Douglases also wed at New York’s Plaza Hotel in front of 250 guests, each of whom were issued a hologram-embedded invitation.
7. Elton John and David Furnish: $1.5 million. This pair wed at Guildhall in Windsor about eight months after Prince Charles wed Camilla Parker-Bowles and celebrated with about 600 guests in two heated tents at John’s mansion in December 2005.
6. Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman: $2 million. This couple wed in front of about 150 guests at the Staglin Family Vineyard in November 2005.
5. Liz Taylor and Larry Fortensky: $2 million. This couple married in front of about 150 guests at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch in 1991. You might be tempted to think that the cost of the wedding should put them at the top of the list when adjusted for inflation. Not quite. If held today, this wedding would have cost about $3 million and would have left them tied for second place.
4. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: $2 million. This pair wed at the Odescalchi Castle outside of Rome, complete with a celebrity guest list in November 2006.
3. Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar: $2.5 million. This pair wed twice – once at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire and again at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India in March 2007. The wedding festivities lasted a mere eight days and included more than 300 guests.
2. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills: $3 million. This couple tied the knot in front of about 300 guests in June 2002 in Monaghan, Ireland, and followed up with a vegetarian reception.
The distinction of having the most expensive celebrity wedding goes to:
1. Liza Minelli and David Gest: $3.5 million. This pair married at Marble Collegiate Church in New York City in front of 500 guests in March 2002. The reception included a 60-piece orchestra, a 12-tier wedding cake and personalized candy favours for each of the guests.
