Honeymoons

August 23, 2007

Along with the plans for your wedding, you and your spouse-to-be should be discussing your honeymoon. Where you go, how long you stay and what you do are all up to you, but honeymoons can provide a relaxing getaway for a couple after the stress of the wedding day.

If you plan to take a honeymoon, plan carefully. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you can pay for the wedding now and delay the honeymoon until after the wedding bills have been paid. Statistics show that most couples who do not take a honeymoon holiday immediately following their wedding don’t ever take a honeymoon. If your heart is set on having one, plan, plan, plan!

Choose a destination based upon some very practical factors: time and money. The time of year will have a big impact on the cost and enjoyability of your getaway, so choose your destination accordingly. The weather and popularity of your desired destination may produce considerable variations in cost throughout the year, especially if the spot is a tourist favourite. If you intend to honeymoon at the height of the tourist season, plan to spend extra cash for everything from food, to hotels, souvenirs and attractions.

Don’t forget to consider the cost of traveling to and from your destination. Flights to out-of-the way places can be a small fortune. A travel planner may be able to help you find good deals, negotiate for better seating or find a less-crowded airport that’s still within a reasonable distance of your preferred destination.

Set a budget for your honeymoon and stick to it! Travel agencies can sometimes find cruises, tour packages and resorts that are all-inclusive. You’ll undoubtedly end up spending more, but at least you have a good starting point for budget planning.

If you’re going someplace exotic, get the proper paperwork for international travel. Do your homework and find out what papers you’ll need for international travel. If you need a passport or visa, allow plenty of time for the application process. Recent world events have introduced tighter travel restrictions and delays for people applying for passports and other travel papers.

Consider having a medical checkup before you depart. Some destinations may require updated vaccinations against certain illnesses, and your doctor may want to add a few of his or her own, depending upon where you plan to be and what you plan to do. Since being sick in a foreign land is no fun, consult a doctor as part of your plan.

Honeymoons may be romantic and fun, but they require some effort! Don’t just take a honeymoon: plan it, and you’ll have much more fun!
