Man Planning: Can A Man Plan A Wedding?

September 14, 2007

Wedding planning is normally both the sacred duty and the exclusive domain of the bride. But can a man plan a wedding?

For most couples, we’ll never know. (And the men prefer it that way!) Traditionally, the bride’s family has planned the wedding, and in most Western cultures, planning still falls on the bride’s side, even if the bride is flying solo.

From the boardroom to the battlefield, men organise, and execute strategy all the time. Logistics companies make billions of dollars each year making sure that the right things are in the right place at the right time. If you’ve ever seen an auto factory or a busy seaport in action, or even a game of footie, you’ll know that men have it in them to plan and execute. Alexander the Great battled the Macedonians on elephants. Philo Farnsworth invented the television. Thomas Stevens circumnavigated the globe on a bicycle. Men have even landed on the moon. So why are they completely lost when it comes to planning a wedding?

Can you even involve a man in the planning? Many women have tried, and a few have had some success, usually limited to things like tuxedos and wedding cars… you know, the manly stuff. You’ll likely get some interest in the scanner at the stores when you register for gifts, and in the honeymoon plans as well. Ask a man about a bomboniere box or a centerpiece, however, and you’re likely to get a preview of what your intended would look like with a head injury.

Most men probably don’t dream of their wedding day in the same way that women do. In some respects, the wedding is so much more about the bride and so much less about the groom, that the groom tends to get lost in the shuffle, even though it’s his wedding too! Is a wedding the one $25,000 decision a woman has a virtual lock on? In most cases, men would issue an emphatic “yes!”

Don’t be disappointed if you can’t seem to get him interested in the plans. Take charge of your wedding planning, with or without your intended, and have a little fun while you’re doing it!
